September 2021 -  What does zero mean? Article for CIBSE Journal

Having a set of commonly agreed, clear and comprehensive definitions for ‘net zero’ buildings is necessary for investment, specifications, trusted and consistent reporting, certification and, ultimately, regulations.

There has been great progress on this in the past few years – first with the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) framework, and then the London Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI) one-pager on operational carbon (energy use), which is supported by CIBSE. As a next step, LETI and the Whole Life Carbon Network (WLCN) recently produced a full set of definitions, including operational, embodied and whole-life carbon.

The LETI-WLCN definitions provide principles, but it is difficult to cover, in a succinct and clear way, the range of situations that a building and its energy supplies may face in practice. CIBSE will now be working with LETI to produce a set of FAQs on these definitions, to support clients and project teams, and bring consistency in how definitions are applied. Clarifications will be provided, along with illustrations of a range of situations.

In addition, CIBSE could decide to adopt the LETI-WLCN definitions.

Engagement with industry is essential on such an important topic, to create the best possible set of definitions for us all to work from.

Please send your thoughts on the definitions, what you think the FAQs should cover, and what position you think CIBSE should adopt, at JGodefroy@cibse.org

Also, look out for events and a survey in the next few weeks, when we will be collating views.

August 2021 - New Project - Good Homes Alliance overheating guidance for retrofit

Following the guidance and tool we created for the Good Homes Alliance on overheating in new homes, Susie Diamond (Inkling) and I are really pleased to be appointed to create a version for retrofits.

This responds to demand from designers, housing associations, environmental health officers, and other parties concerned with overheating risk, particularly when retrofitting the existing housing stock. The aim is to produce simple practical guidance to help identify and mitigate the risk of overheating in energy retrofits, informing design options and mitigation measures.

The project is co-funded by the BEIS funded REFINE project on radical decarbonisation of social housing through whole house energy retrofits, and by the National Energy Foundation. The REFINE project is one of the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund Demonstrators led by Warwick District Council and Oxford Brookes University with Enhabit and Sarah Wigglesworth Architects.

June 2021 - Publication of report on the Future of SAP

In the past few months, on behalf of CIBSE I worked as part of a team led by Etude on the future of SAP, a project commissioned by BEIS (the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy).

The team included CIBSE, Elementa, Levitt Bernstein, WSP, UCL, Clarion Housing Group and Etude.

Our report makes recommendations on improving SAP and RdSAP so they are fit for Net Zero.

SAP is the calculation methodology used to estimate and regulate the energy and carbon performance of new homes and the existing housing stock across the United Kingdom, from small works to large new developments. It is a central tool for those developing, implementing and tracking policies on energy, fuel poverty and carbon emissions and is being used by the whole building industry.

Our 25 recommendations are split into five areas:
  •     Better align SAP/RdSAP and its strategic objectives
  •     Improvements to the methodology
  •     Improvements to SAP/RdSAP and its ecosystem for Net Zero
  •     For a better evaluation of energy use
  •     Support to decarbonisation of heat and electricity.
The report is available to download here:

July 2020 - Talk at IET event - Responding to COVID-19: Healthy Living and Housing

This event was the first in a series organised by the IET on responses to covid-19. It examined how our lived environments impact our health, specifically how indoor environments are a critical part of the health and wellbeing of older people, though an issue that attracts little attention. This includes factors such as comfortable temperatures in summer and winter, indoor air quality, and acoustic comfort.

I presented the approach advocated in CIBSE TM40 for healthy and comfortable indoor environments, and some of the uncertainties and knowledge gaps in our understanding of how environmental factors contribute to health outcomes in the elderly. I also highlighted areas where the pandemic has highlighted existing knowledge and the importance of good housing design.

The other speakers were Dr. Helen Crampin, Innovation Lead at InnovateUK, Annalise Johns, Housing Lead at the Connected Places Catapult, Richard Miller, Associate Director at the Connected Places Catapult, and Dr Sophie Taysom, Independent Consultant at Keyah Consulting.

July 2020 - Talk at Carbon Coop AGM - How do we make homes zero carbon ready?

Carbon Co-op has long talked about the need for ‘2050 Retrofits’, but what does it mean today to aim for a home fit for a ‘climate safe’ future? Is it an 80% cut in carbon emissions? A ‘net zero’ home? And why bother at all if we transition away from gas to electric only homes and the grid is completely decarbonised?

The discussion explored some of these terms and concepts and what they mean for the work Carbon Co-op does. It covered why the minimum required by building regulations is not enough, what performance targets we should be using , and the design strategies and services available to homeowners to make ambitious energy and carbon targets a reality.

The other speakers were Marianne Heaslip from Urbed, John Palmer from the Passivhaus Trust and Lois Hurst from Heriot-Watt University.

October 2019  - Launch of Heritage Declares

Over the last few months I havebeen involved with a Heritage Declares, a group of heritage practitioners who want the heritage sector to react more quickly and effectively to the climate and ecological emergency. It is distinct from other sustainability initiatives within the sector in that we are a grassroots movement that aims to push the environmental crisis to the top of the heritage agenda.

In October 2019 we launched a Declaration, setting out ten principles for a more sustainable sector. Both individuals and organisations can sign the Declaration, as an expression of their commitment.

We believe that the heritage sector can play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and action on climate and ecological issues.

Heritage also has much to offer a more sustainable world, for example in terms of preserving and reusing existing buildings, promoting traditional and sustainable construction and land management techniques, and reducing air- and car-based tourism in favour of greener alternatives.

Do feel free to get in touch if you have comments or want to find out more.

Please read our Declaration, sign, and share!

September 2019 -  Article for CIBSE Journal  on Permitted Development Rights

In recent months, government has made a raft announcements meant to deliver quality and sustainable homes and places, and to protect homeowners and renters.

However, it has also repeatedly extended Permitted Development Rights (PDRs), which allow the creation of homes by converting other buildings (e.g. offices, warehouses) without requiring planning permission.

There is growing evidence that this is leading to homes with shocking standards of safety, accessibility, quality and sustainability. Some homes have hardly any daylight and ventilation. In addition, it is very questionable whether PDRs have allowed the promised improvements in housing supply, affordability, and local authority resources.

Government must listen and review the policy, to stop creating a legacy of homes that are a risk to safety, health, and sustainability objectives

OrganiCity supports urban experiments to help solve key problems in our cities today. It is sponsored by the Horizon 2020 Program of the European Commission.

With Tranquil City we aim to investigate the design, noise, and air quality characteristics of the spaces that Londoners find tranquil, using our Tranquil City map points. This will allow us to research the health and wellbeing benefits of visiting and walking through tranquil spaces. We will then also create prototypes of ‘tranquil routes’ through the city.
